🎬 ~ Bottoms

rating: 8/10

fun movie. i approve. did they commit murder and get away with it? yes. was i rooting for hazel the entire time? yes. is hazel my favourite? yes. does hazel need more bombs? also yes. "oh now you want a bomb." ma'am, i am willing to do heinous things for you.

ISABEL IS SO PRETTY TOO. i literally had no idea that ayo edebiri was in this movie until i saw her onscreen lol. she's great in her role. and rachel sennott eats whatever she's in. this was my first time seeing one of her projects and i'm looking forward to seeing Shiva Baby sometime. NICHOLAS GALITZINE SIR this dude just comes in, eats, and leaves. he was so clearly a truck of fruit—how is he still with women? i liked the stylisation of the movie—definitely a chick flick that's one of its kind. up there with Do Revenge on my list of girls night movies, for sure. they must've had sm fun making this haha.

🎬 ~ The Marvels

rating: 7/10

ok, it's not as terrible as people make it out to be. i had fun watching it tbh. at this point i'm convinced that people just don't like women leading front and centre. the movie does have its flaws but it is a fine self-contained movie for some light watching. the villain is another generic weak marvel antagonist and completely forgettable but honestly i don't care. only the plot left a little more to be desired. the humor of the movie is funny coz i loved seeing muslim inclusivity in a superhero movie like this. so yea, good movie. and i completely lost it when kate bishop came onscreen she's so hawt fjfjdjskks. i am curious to see how the x-men thing ties in to this tho.

📺 ~ The Bear

rating: 9.9/10

the rating is goofy but this show is GOOD. every character has distinct personalities and something going for them. i love how it's the characters that drive the plot—and it is quite character focused. the writing is great, the acting and performances so phenomenal that sometimes i forget that this is acting coz it feels real. this felt like a novel, but tv adapted? the tension in the kitchen in the beginning, where everyone is uncooperative, and at the end w more harmony among them was wonderful. definitely a good show. i'm glad that it was short tho lol i can't handle too much. episode 7, the penultimate episode, was my favourite. i don't know how much of it was one shot coz i only realised halfway through that the camera wasn't cutting but the atmosphere could literally be felt through the screen the way everything was high strung and i was living for it. would deffo recommend for binging.

🎬 ~ The Menu

rating: 7.25/10

definitely one of the more interesting movies i've watched. i recognised that it was a satire but i didn't have an idea of WHAT exactly until i read one letterboxd review. i'm too dumb to catch and intellectualise allegory unless it's spoonfed to me—i'm new to this lol. but anyway this was my first time seeing anya taylor joy's work and she's wonderful. ralph fiennes could've been in his voldemort persona and this movie would still be funny. i quite liked the close-room setting of the movie and how it all escalates within that enclosed space. i thought this was just an exaggerated comedy drama abt making the quintessential cheeseburger w jon favreau as the chef but i was VERY wrong on almost all accounts. seeing the horror/thriller tag in the genre section made me raise an eyebrow haha. the format of the movie itself was quite unique so i have to praise it for its originality. it's a critique on critics and i kinda love that. the movie did what it came to do and did a decent job at it, so kudos to all. this is smart screenwriting.

📺 ~ Echo

rating: 5.75/10

umm. let's just say this isn't a good start for the new year. if this show was pregnant it probably had a miscarriage because it did not deliver. tonally and narratively, i expected something more grounded in that same dark gritty setting of new york like the netflix-marvel shows, but instead what i got was this mass-manufactured product that feels so wholly unoriginal and boring that i'm convinced no proper artist could've written this. don't get me wrong: i appreciate the representation of native-american heritage and characters and the rep for hearing-impairment. i feel like the signing was very smoothly incorporated into the scenes. but. this show lacks substance and plot and stakes. WHAT was maya trying to do?? i feel like i haven't gotten to know her character at all. i had high hopes for this but it was tanked. this is the longest 1 hour movie of my life (derogatory) and the only point of this was to set up the plot of daredevil born again w that last post-credits scene w kingpin. my faith in marvel is dead.
