🎬 ~ JoJo Rabbit

rating: 7/10

disclaimer: i'm trying to write down all my reviews after a long time. my memory of things might be shoddy.

genuinely felt like wes anderson directed this movie, or at least influenced its making. this movie does a good job in exploring the impressionable mind of a young kid and how they're more likely to fall for nationalist propoganda and hero worship of fascist dictators because they don't know any better. watching this movie coincided pretty nicely with the lessons about WW2 in my history class at uni and after hearing my professor say that most of hitler's supporters were young people, i couldn't help but connect it to this movie and see just how much propoganda affected hitler's favour in germany. but i was kinda disappointed w the butterfly scene coz i expected more out of it... my fault. scarlett johansson was amazing. and the gays were funny yet tragic. the last scene where one of them gets jojo out of the american soldiers' hands before getting shot was genuinely sad. also yorki is such a cinnamon bun. we need to protect yorki. i hope jojo and yorki will always be friends.

cannot believe harvey weinstein produced this. i was so into robin williams and the way his character talked about his wife. may this type of love find me. the baseball story re-enactment was also so good. this was my first time seeing ben affleck and matt damon be onscreen together. wild that they wrote this script, but the story also emanates their own familiarity with boston. SEAN AND GERRY THO. the stench of doomed old man yaoi from them was so pungent i couldn't help but overanalyse it. like, robin williams, sir, you HAD to have played sean like that intentionally. will's supergenius ahh was interesting to see too. i wasn't expecting that coz i intentionally went in blind with this story. i liked it tho.

sopping wet trash. garbage. quality control has effectively died in marvel. kevin feige, how could you have ever greenlit this? the script was ass, the production was ass. i watched this entire movie in 2x speed coz i was DONE with it as soon as it began. u can tell how badly i saw it by the way i genuinely thought sam was about to say "sun's getting real low" to ross' red hulk to calm him down. the green screen was also killing me like??? ZERO EFFORT. this is right down there with antman quantumania as the mcu's worst movie. this is what happens when u let ur franchise get taken over by capitalists and businessmen instead of people who genuinely love the world they're creating. i don't want artists to fight tooth and nail to be able to put quality content out there. this was just straight slop. they weren't even trying. i feel bad for anthony mackie to have to put up with this. he's a great actor who deserves better scripts.

i have... complicated feelings about this movie. do i think it was good? yes. i think it was. but i think the problem i ran into was that this movie's premise reminded me of that one particular thing jeffrey wright's character had a problem with in black stories in American Fiction. does that mean this particular facet of the black experience isn't valid? no it is. it's just that this is new for me to see as someone who has grown up consuming mainstream media, and pre-dominantly stories written by and for white people. i'm sure this movie must've been influential in 2016, but watching this in 2025 in an age where representation has improved by leaps and bounds, the effect was lost on me and i judged this movie very objectively.

i liked how we saw chiron in different phases of his life. i appreciated that one detail that the director sought—that even though the actors for chiron would change, his eyes should remain the same. WAS I EXPECTING HIM TO GET WITH KEVIN FR? NO. in my mind i was like "yo it'd be sick if chiron and kevin kiss" AND THEY DID. ON THE BEACH. UNDER MOONLIGHT. the visual poetry of this movie is amazing. and if i'd watched it at night in one sitting i'm sure i would've appreciated it more. i also like the use of color in this movie. don't remember much about the score tho. and JANELLE MONAE WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!? i genuinely wasn't expecting to see her. she ate her role as teresa.

this is winning Best Picture at The Oscars—no question. this is ryan coogler's magnum opus (i say even tho i haven't watched creed yet). this man has magic in his mind and he brought it onscreen. this was a crazy experience in the theatre. even tho i barely understood 50% of what was coming out of everyone's southern ahh mouths without subtitles, i know that a good movie is a good movie. that one sequence, you know the one i'm talking about, was a spiritual experience. my jaw was on the FLOOR. i knew this movie was going to be special as soon as the opening scene started and i am so glad i was proven right.

📖 ~ Just A Bit Unhealthy

rating: 1/5

gabriel's character was just ragebaiting me this entire book. I HATE SUBMISSIVE CHARACTERS. not really coz when they're done well i love them but even Jared was egregious coz why would u fantasize about sleeping with a teenage boy WHO ISN'T EVEN LEGAL AND U'RE YEARS OLDER THAN HIM LIKE WHAT. AND EVEN CLAIRE WAS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL BABYTRAPPING GABRIEL UGH. i despised this book. very bad. mayhaps the worst of every book i've read in this series because not only was it bad, it was also BORING, which is a federal crime.

taika waititi and jemaine clement—sirs, you have done it. this is such a good slapstick comedy gem. there's not enough people who know about this and that is crazy. the characters, the dialogue, the comedic timing and mockumentary style format go together so well. i was not expecting rhys to be one of the werewolves in this but the parellels between this and Our Flag Means Death were great. man i miss ofmd. both are so campy and funny. i really want to watch the show for this now. also: stu protection squad where we at?

📖 ~ Just A Bit Wrecked

rating: 2/5

let's be ffr rn: this book doesn't deserve a two star lmfao. this is book one of a series of dumb low-quality gay eroticas that found itself on my instagram reels and i was too intrigued to give it up. i don't even remember much from this book anymore except for the fact that the non-con sex on the island was abhorrent to read. like u could've EASILY discussed it and given consent before going crazy. it made me uncomfortable. but the thing i liked was the exploration of codependency after they've been rescued from the island. it was interesting, to say the least. this was just a ridiculous book but, as u will see from future reviews, i kept returning to this series like it was my favorite trash tv show. but did i like the macho dom top x subby bottom dynamic that's literally every dynamic in this series? no.

they really baited me into thinking he died and made me cry in my dorm. but i liked this movie. i think it explores mental health in a way that i've maybe only seen in Orange so far. i don't think i've ever seen deaf representation in anime either so that was a good thing to see as well. the story is beautiful and the themes it explores, like bullying and depression and suicide, it does well in. i like that this didn't end up being a romance and was a genuine look at the feelings of the characters at a time in their life, and how every single one of them is multifaceted.

📺 ~ Interview With The Vampire (Season 1)

 rating: 10/10

i'm afraid i've been completely and utterly besotted with the vampire armand. i GIGGLE every time he is on screen. i am in love with armand, and this show. i've been wanting to watch it for ages and by some stroke of luck finally had the chance to after relentless jack sparrowing (my luck only ran as far as finding the show but without subtitles. i had to make out what lestat's french arse was saying every time). the first episode had me HOOKED. it grabbed me by my throat and refused to let go. it was all i could think about when going to sleep and then waking up. i haven't had this feeling since i watched Young Royals for the first time in august of 2022. i binged this show after returning from college. i'm only writing this review down so that my initial thoughts don't get blurred when i continue on to the second season tonight.

the pacing of the show, the writing (even with all its modifications), the characters, the format, the editing, the back and forth in time: IMMACULATE, i say. i understand why it has a 98% rotten tomatoes rating. thank you tumblr for bringing this wonderful show into my orbit. i can't wait to watch season 2 and read the book and jump headfirst into tumblr and glorious armand fics.

we hate lestat in this house. i'm gonna be so pissed when he comes back in the second season. i just want armand so bad you see jfhwjkdhf. man i haven't had it this bad for a character in a long long while.

this show is a masterpiece. i can't believe i'd been sleeping on it for so long. anne rice i owe you.
