📺 ~ XO Kitty (Season 2)

 rating: 3/10

this show is corny. kitty needs to stop being a disaster bi/pansexual. also she needs to date minho asap. everyone in this show pisses me off except minho and dae maybe. this show also has no plot. it's js trash tv. this is like emily in paris but kitty in korea. i don't have anything nice to say about this show coz it's so forgettable.

🎬 ~ The Super Mario Bros. Movie

 rating: 7/10

disclaimer: i'm trying to write down all my reviews after a long time. my memory of things might be shoddy but i'll try my best to capture what i initially felt about the pieces of media that i consumed in my review.

ngl, i remember the least abt this movie coz it feels like a fever dream and my audio quality while watching this on the plane was absolutely horrendous. tf was this movie even about? someone's acid trip? i just remember princess peach being an absolute badass and loving luigi coz he's totally my type. the animation was cool but i don't really remember many specific details about the plot. whoever that charmander looking dude was, he had it BAD for princess peach. would be funny if it weren't lowkey creepy. i could benefit from a rewatch but other wise it was just a fine movie ig. not my cup of tea.

watched this on the plane from london to chicago. THIS was damien chazelle's directorial debut? barking mad, that man is. this might just be his magnum opus. i know i watched la la land as well, but this movie was just different. i love movies that explore ambition and obsession. it twinges something in me, ykwim? terence fletcher is a great villain, and andrew is crazy. the final scene of this movie is one of the best in cinematic history. the entire movie was building up to andrew's drum solo at the end and safe to say, it did NOT disappoint. i was tapping my fingers along with it like i was conducting the orchestra and the guy beside me on the plane (rlly hot guy btw) probably thought i was loony but who gives a shite? i was enjoying myself. i was so satisfied by the end when the credits started rolling that i was compelled to give it a standing ovation were i not on a literal airplane strapped down to my seat. also i literally forgot that melissa benoist was in this movie. she's so pretty. and a great actress too. anyways, yea. masterclass in all aspects of film. this movie is perfect.

🎬 ~ Gone Girl

rating: 6/10

it doesn't do justice to the book's nuance. the book is a genuine masterclass in unreliable narration and character-building with two extremely unlikeable protagonists but the movie fails to capture the inner feelings of these characters in favour of the plot.

and the music didn't help the direction. i have become quite a fan of trent reznor and atticus ross' brand of music, but i felt like it wasn't a good score here because it threw the actual suspenseful moments off balance and didn't fit the narrative.

the performances also felt a little lazy? ben affleck's line delivery was killing me—why did it feel like it was just read out loud and not performed? rosamund pike had more substance in her performance, but not by a very large margin. she's a good physical actor but the line delivery in some parts could've used some work.

man, this movie was disappointing. it's only my second time watching a david fincher movie but the tone and camera work was pretty consistent with what i saw of him in The Killer. i just feel like a different director would've been a better choice for bringing this narrative to the screen.

📺 ~ Bridgerton (Season 3)

 rating: 6/10

guess who finally finished this? judging by the fact that i am writing this review right now, the answer is me. it took me MONTHS because i hated this season a lot, primarily owing to the booktok-ification of colin bridgerton, who is undoubtably my least favourite bridgerton after this season. everything i loved about polin was destroyed. but i did enjoy watching the first four episodes. i just wish there was more slowburn and pining because this ship has been built all the way since season 1 so the payoff here wasn't executed as well as it should have been. also maybe after season 2, my expectations for this were perhaps entirely too high. but as much as i thought i'd hate watching the latter part of the season, i surprisingly did not? i mean, i still watched it in 2x speed but i was still fine with the way things went. this is definitely the weakest entry in the bridgerton series (despite the fact that nicola coughlan absolutely delivered on her performance), but it was... cute. i mean that a little derogatorily btw.

benedict's arc this season just confirmed he's bisexual, or bi-curious at least, and i love that, especially because the seeds for this were already laid from season 1 itself. i genuinely can't wait to see his story in season 4, which, as far as i know, is coming out sometime later this year. if you didn't already know, he's my favorite bridgerton hehe. i love his and eloise's swing conversations every season.

speaking of eloise, i really want to see where her arc takes her because it's been a pretty interesting ride seeing her development through the course of the entire story. as far as i'm aware, eloise's romance is with the much older widower of marina thompson. i wish that not to end up being the case in the future because i desperately need her to get back with theo. their entire story was so cute and it felt so good to see eloise finally connect to a man who was on her same wavelength. they need to make a petition to bring theo and eloise back together. stat.

i really don't have much more to say on this, except that i kinda hated it. it was mid. average. anyways, yea—that's the review.

🎬 ~ Wicked

rating: 10/10

yes, it is good. yes, it made me cry. the ozdust ballroom scene was just something, okay. i love it. i have never watched the musical but i like to believe this adaptation was frighteningly faithful to the original. i can see why people adore it so much. it's such a wonderful tale of female camaraderie and friendship. the origin story of elphaba, so beautifully written.

the direction and choreography in this movie was so exquisite. and the details—goodness, you could tell this movie was created by people who genuinely loved the source material—it's a labour of love, and it's my favourite thing in the world to see projects where the vision is so wholly manifested in its quintessential form by people who truly care for it.

cynthia erivo and ariana grande are absolutely bonkers crazy talented. god blessed them with vocal chords of steel and they make full use of it. the high notes and belting are so mesmerising to hear and witness. apparently they sung a lot of it live during filming and my respect for such artists is boundless. it's such a hard job and yet they keep delivering the best they can.

jonathan bailey is an absolute scene-stealer in every project he takes, because BOY were you giving EYES to elphaba the moment you met her lol. i loved the banter and the way he actually accepts her as she is without being so judgemental. i suppose he should know better than anyone that looks can be deceiving and is genuine in his care and feelings for her. (sidenote: boq and glinda actually had such good chemistry and call me delusional but i could literally see ariana and ethan in them because THE LOOK IN THEIR EYES THE MOMENT THEY MEET OKAY I SAW IT THAT SHIT WAS AS REAL AS IT GETS THAT WAS NOT ACTING)

man, what a movie. i sincerely wish i could've seen this in theatres—it'd've been such an experience. but alas, it was not written. i do look forward to seeing the second part in theatres, though, because officially, this movie only covers act 1 of the musical, and the sequel is tentatively scheduled for november of this year. so lessgooo!!

📖 ~ Gone Girl

 rating: 5/5

i was dead set on giving this a four out of spite because it took me almost three months to read but oh my god—those last fifty pages? i was stunned by the time i reached the end. i don't think i've ever read a bad ending in a book before—bittersweet, yes—but never bad. if you think about it, though, wasn't this the best ending? amy and nick: the most toxic, fuxxed up soulmates to exist. they deserve each other. lord. i felt like i'd reached a bad ending in a visual novel after i'd finished this book. best i can describe it is the thousand yard stare meme. it was bonkers. gillian flynn is one hell of a writer because this book is a masterclass in unreliable narration and character writing. she knows the voice of her two protagonists so well that you can tell exactly the way they perceive the world. they're so mentally messed up. goodness, wow. how do you move on from this? i might sound a tad dramatic here because the post-book emotions are still a little high, but this is literally a modern classic. i don't think i'm the first person to say that—i shouldn't be either. i'm glad i own this book.

📺 ~ Arcane (Season 2)

 rating: 8.95/10

my bad, honestly. this took me a month to complete so my recollection is pretty shite. i just finished the last two episodes an hour ago, and jinx's death (if she even dies, that is) along with ekko burning the paper with her name in the same spot he had kissed au!jinx brought tears to my eyes. i completely get the timebomb hype. they're so overpowered together hehe i love it.  caitlyn is hot. that's all i'm gonna say about her. that one episode 8 scene was good asf. isha's death also got me sad face emoji-ing. that was such a beautiful scene and i was completely enraptured by the music and the beauty. and man, powder and ekko dancing to that french song was also so good. vander's revival was shocking as well, and sad. WHY IS THIS SHOW SAD AGAIN AND AGAIN. ugh. this eats. i gave it a lower rating than s1 because i always tend to have problems with second seasons of shows (with some exceptions). it's not the show's fault, really—it's just that i often end up feeling like i'm seeing fanfiction play out instead of canon. i did not feel like that this time, but it did feel like i didn't know what was really happening here lol. it's like there's so many leaps and bounds to get from point A to point B. i guess i got a little overwhelmed with the info being thrown my way, which is again, my fault for being a binge watcher and not letting things sit. anyways, i guess i can now freely consume arcane and timebomb content without fear of spoilers. lessgo.
