i was dead set on giving this a four out of spite because it took me almost three months to read but oh my god—those last fifty pages? i was stunned by the time i reached the end. i don't think i've ever read a bad ending in a book before—bittersweet, yes—but never bad. if you think about it, though, wasn't this the best ending? amy and nick: the most toxic, fuxxed up soulmates to exist. they deserve each other. lord. i felt like i'd reached a bad ending in a visual novel after i'd finished this book. best i can describe it is the thousand yard stare meme. it was bonkers. gillian flynn is one hell of a writer because this book is a masterclass in unreliable narration and character writing. she knows the voice of her two protagonists so well that you can tell exactly the way they perceive the world. they're so mentally messed up. goodness, wow. how do you move on from this? i might sound a tad dramatic here because the post-book emotions are still a little high, but this is literally a modern classic. i don't think i'm the first person to say that—i shouldn't be either. i'm glad i own this book.
